Lei (Garland)

Lei is a garland or necklace of flowers given in Hawaii as a token of welcome or farewell. Leis are most commonly made of carnations, kika blossoms, ginger blossoms, jasmine blossoms, or orchids and are usually about 18 inches (46 cm) long. But in some countries, like in Philipina, a lei is any series of objects strung together with the intent of being worn. Lei are not only constructed of flowers, but also leaves, sea shells, seeds, nuts, feathers, or even bones of various animals. A lei is a common symbol of love, friendship, celebration, honor, or greeting. In essence, it is a symbol of Aloha.

This Lei is a friendship gift from UM Tagum, Mindanao for the team of Faculty Exchange 2024.
